About
A TRUE FAMILY BUSINESS
Bulo is a proud family-owned company with a legacy of crafting exceptional furniture for over 60 years. What began in 1963 with our grandfather’s design of a modest filing pedestal has evolved into a respected name in the design industry. Today, the third generation, three brothers continues the legacy, combining craftsmanship, aesthetics, and innovation to create timeless pieces.
THE BIRTH OF BULO
Walter Busschop has an idea. In 1963, he designs a mobile filing pedestal, elegant, stylish, and functional. What begins as a single design soon proves to be the start of something much bigger. Walter uses the proceeds from the sales of the filing cabinet to launch his own office furniture company. The name Bulo was born.
CELEBRATING THE PAST
Let’s go back to 1970. A time when Bulo began to conquer the Belgian roads with a remarkable marketing campaign. Motorists were offered a free “Bulo” spray job for their cars. What started as a bold promotional idea soon grew into a familiar phenomenon. A simple marketing stunt had transformed into an iconic sight: the black Bulo car that would dominate Belgian roads for years to come.
THE OFFICE LOOK
In 1980, Bulo offers a complete, all-inclusive office look: from its desks and chairs to curtains, lighting and plants.
THE HEADQUARTERS
In just twenty years, Bulo has become synonymous with high-quality office furniture. With international growth on the horizon, the company brings its various divisions together under one roof. In 1987, Bulo moves into a new headquarters at the Noordelijk industrial estate, along the E19 connecting Brussels and Antwerp.
FROM REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT TO TIMELESS ICON
For the first time, Bulo collaborates with external designers Claire Bataille & Paul Ibens. Inspired by the German Pavilion at the 1928 Barcelona World’s Fair, they redefine the traditional desk as a pure four-legged table.
Launched in 1994, H2O was a revolutionary concept that opened new possibilities, from workplace to residential interiors, and marked Bulo’s evolution into a design brand embraced by architects.
BULO GOES GLOBAL
Bulo opens its first international showroom in London. Its unique location at Butler’s Wharf, right next to the Design Museum, reflects the company’s strong commitment to good design. In 1998, Bulo takes another step forward with the opening of a second international showroom in Cologne. Amsterdam and New York soon follow.
2006
Sister company Bosq, an expert in veneer, shares a production facility and showroom with Bulo in Mechelen. With over 100 years of combined experience, craftsmanship, innovation and sustainability are at the heart of both companies. Together, Bulo and Bosq create high-quality European design furniture, with a particular focus on local, reclaimed and unique wood species.
2013
In 2013, Bulo celebrated its 50th anniversary with a major event at its showroom in Mechelen. A giant red O was installed on the building as a landmark along the E19 motorway, also symbolising the connection between the different disciplines Bulo offers.
2015
Carlo Busschop becomes Chief Executive for Export and, as the first member of the third generation within the family business, represents the future of Bulo.
2023
Bulo celebrates its 60th anniversary with new collections and editions, launched at Salone del Mobile in Milan. With over 60 years of craftsmanship and passion for the profession, Bulo remains committed to creating unique, timeless and elegant furniture that inspires people to shape their living and working spaces for decades to come.
SEPTEMBER 2024
We proudly celebrate 30 years of H2O, the iconic table by Bataille & Ibens. A timeless design that has become a symbol of elegance, simplicity and craftsmanship, and remains just as relevant and refined today as it was in 1994.
JUNI 2024
Sustainability takes a central role in Bulo’s vision of materials and design. With collections such as Eco Lucca and Eco Dan, we combine conscious material choices with timeless design, quality and comfort, marking an important step towards a more sustainable future.
2026
In 2026, Bulo further expanded its network with partners such as The Hub and Maagma. In these carefully curated environments, visitors can experience our collections in context and discover them in a more personal way. This allows us to strengthen both our visibility and our connection with architects and clients.
